Matthew Lopez’s script places a most unlikely combination of characters in a most unique set of circumstances. Two slaves and their injured former owner take refuge in their home at the close of the Civil War.
Musically, I looked to combine folk songs of the period with timeless Jewish melodies and harmonic ideas. It allowed for a juxtaposition of sounds that work extremely well together to tell an emotional arc.
